Mississippi Mason, hailing from Columbus, MS, is a singer-songwriter dedicated to crafting music for "simple folks"—offering storytelling songs with catchy melodies and relatable lyrics. Raised traveling with his dad’s southern gospel band, it was only natural for Mason to become a musician himself.
With influences spanning old and new country, southern rock, and gospel, Mason effortlessly blends ball caps with cowboy hats, even dedicating an entire song to the latter. His songwriting draws inspiration from legends like Johnny Cash, Jamey Johnson, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, evoking a timeless quality in his voice that recalls the mid-century country balladeers like Jim Reeves and could even place him alongside the Highwaymen.
His debut album, Just The Way I Am, released in late spring 2022, showcases his versatile songwriting. The album kicks off with the southern rock anthem “Don’t Take Me Back,” transitions into the gothic-country plea “Say a Prayer,” and flows into the laid-back “Dancing In The Dark.” Tracks like the lighthearted “Tombigbee Bend” and the heartfelt “Outskirts of Heaven” demonstrate his range, while “Hey Babe” adds a touch of romance. Mason also pays homage to traditional Nashville sounds with his original “Better On My Own” and a cover of the Cash classic “Folsom Prison Blues.” The album concludes with an upbeat tribute to his grandfather, “This Cowboy Hat of Mine,” and the reflective “The Weary Road.”
